The 10 Most Popular Tiki Drinks (with Pictures!)

Tiki is a fascinating topic to explore: it ranges from design to clothing to food and – of course – drink. While it’s inspired by reality, it also seeks to create fantasy and escapism through every element – whether you’re at a bar enjoying a professionally made drink or mixing up a concoction at home.

I thought it might be helpful, as this site is relatively new, to have a list of the most popular tiki drinks; you’ll find most or all of these on the menu at basically every tiki bar, from San Francisco to London to Tokyo. They are – in short – essential, or rather quintessential, examples of the best (and most transportation) tiki has to offer.

Most Popular Tiki Drinks Hero

To explain how these tiki drinks made my list, I looked at some of the most popular recipe sites on the internet, and how many reviews each one had (plus the star ratings, where available). In the end, the top 10 most popular tiki drinks will probably not surprise you – though maybe some at the bottom of the list might not be ones you find on every single menu.

In any case, this list is a great starting place if you’re new to tiki, or a ‘bucket list’ for long-time tiki fans looking to try something new and delicious. Before you start reading, take a guess – which 10 tiki drinks do you think are the most popular? Ready to find out if you’re right? Read on, and bottoms up!

1. Painkiller

A creamy, tropical delight, the Painkiller combines dark rum, pineapple juice, orange juice, and coconut cream, topped with freshly grated nutmeg. This drink originated in the British Virgin Islands and is a signature cocktail of Pusser’s Rum.

The Painkiller is also my husband’s absolute favorite tiki drink, and he tries it everywhere we can find it on a menu (which is every tiki bar).

2. Mai Tai

The Mai Tai is perhaps the most famous tiki drink, originally crafted by Victor “Trader Vic” Bergeron in the 1940s. A perfect balance of rum, lime juice, orgeat syrup, and orange liqueur, this cocktail is both refreshing and complex.

This is my bar equalizer cocktail: I try it at every tiki bar to set the standard for how creative (or wacky) the bartenders might be.

3. Hurricane

This New Orleans-born classic features a mix of light and dark rum, passion fruit syrup, and lemon juice, creating a fruity and refreshing cocktail that’s perfect for warm weather.

I’m not personally a huge fan of Hurricanes, but they’re obviously popular as you can get them in multi-foot-long cups in NOLA.

4. Blue Hawaii

A visually striking drink, the Blue Hawaii features light rum, vodka, blue curaçao, pineapple juice, and sweet and sour mix.

It was invented by bartender Harry Yee in 1957 in Honolulu and remains a poolside favorite, though I’ll admit I didn’t see it on any menus the last time I was on the islands… maybe it’s too on-the-nose!

5. Singapore Sling

A gin-based tiki cocktail, the Singapore Sling includes cherry liqueur, Cointreau, Bénédictine, pineapple juice, lime juice, grenadine, and bitters.

It offers a fruity and herbal complexity that sets it apart from other tropical drinks; gin isn’t a common base but it’s actually my favorite (maybe that makes me a bad tiki fan, but being unconventional is also part of tiki culture!).

6. Suffering Bastard

Originally created as a hangover cure, the Suffering Bastard embodies the concept of the “hair of the dog” making it all better.

It combines bourbon, gin, lime juice, bitters, and ginger beer, making it a unique and spicy addition to the tiki world – and also a kick in the face if you’re not careful!

7. Zombie

Created by Don the Beachcomber in the 1930s, the Zombie is a potent mix of multiple rums, lime juice, falernum, bitters, and a dash of grenadine.

It’s often garnished with a mint sprig and a flaming lime shell for a dramatic presentation; many bars have a limit on how many you can have, since it’s so strong!

8. Jungle Bird

One of the few tiki drinks to incorporate a bitter element, the Jungle Bird mixes dark rum, pineapple juice, lime juice, simple syrup, and Campari. This unique blend makes it a favorite for those who enjoy a hint of complexity in their tropical cocktails.

I have never had a jungle bird because I am not a fan of bitter in anything – much less my beloved tiki drinks!

9. Rum Swizzle

Known as Bermuda’s national drink, the Rum Swizzle is a blend of dark and light rum, orange juice, pineapple juice, grenadine, and bitters, shaken vigorously to create a frothy, refreshing cocktail. This is another drink that’s perfect for hot days near the pool or on the beach.

10. Rum Runner

This Florida-born cocktail is a mix of dark and light rum, banana liqueur, blackberry liqueur, orange juice, lime juice, and grenadine. It’s a fruity and potent tiki staple that’s often blended or served over ice.

The Rum Runner is versatile enough that you’ll find it on many non-tiki menus, but it’s definitely rooted in tiki!

What a great site I stumbled upon!! Can’t recall how so it must be divinity at work!
First, #1 the Pain Killer. Absolutely. With Pussers rum exclusively. Be a purist! I’ve imbibed in hundreds of these over the years. Taught a few bars how to make them, and never heard a complaint. (https://islandcafepdx.com/) the secret? It’s the nutmeg!! I prefer mine a little heavier than recipe. Try it and see if you don’t agree.
I’ll give a shout out to the long gone Tahitian Lanai in Honolulu, suggest Buzz’s Steak house in Lanikai ( exclusively, no other) and The Alibi Tiki Bar in Portland OR and La Mariana Sailing Club on Sand Island minutes from the HNL airport! ( True Tiki, go while it’s still there!) la-mariana-sailing.club
    Aloha Tiki Fans!
